What Is Backcountry Skiing?
Backcountry skiing is a simple, relaxed way to explore the winter landscape on skis. There are no chairlifts, no groomed runs, and no steep downhill skiing required.
Instead of staying on a set trail, you glide over snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, and gently rolling terrain at your own pace. Think of it as snowshoeing on skis, with more glide and less effort.
The skis are wider and more stable than traditional cross-country skis, making them easy to balance and control, and you move forward using a natural walking motion that is quick to pick up even if you have never skied before.
Backcountry skiing in Muskoka is not about speed or technical skills. It is about getting outside, enjoying the quiet of winter, and exploring areas you cannot access on foot alone.
It is well suited for beginners, couples, families, and anyone who enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, or winter walks. No lessons or prior experience are required, just warm clothing and a sense of adventure.
